Sara and Brad did not join us Thursday night because they are camping up in North Conway. She called me last night and said they are having a great time.
Yesterday, we took a ride up into the White Mountains and decided on a whim to take the Auto Road up to the Summit of Mt Washington. What a beautiful day for that and what a glorious ride! I am a bit ashamed to admit that I had never done that before and OH MY what I have been missing! I was like a kid in a candy store. So so freeking BEAUTIFUL! I still can't get over it. I took tons of pics and will include a few here, but the photos do not do that majestic mountain justice! It was definitely worth the $27 to drive up 6000+ feet, 8 miles up into the sky! You feel like you are on top of the world. If you have a fear of heights, don't go! LOL The road is winding and very narrow, pretty much only wide enough for 2 vehicles, with no guard rails on either side. It's a LONG way down, for sure, if you aren't paying attention. There are plenty of spots where you can pull over to absorb the gorgeous scenery and take pics, but I took most of them while we were moving so some of them aren't as sharp as they could be. Still, I think you can get a pretty good idea of how beautiful it is up there.
We definitely are going to go up again and the next time I will drive so George can enjoy everything as I did. He's been up there a few times but always was the driver and had to really watch the road.

Today we are kicking back and just relaxing. I think we did a bit too much yesterday and the poor guy is looking a bit tired today. He's actually taking a nap right now on the sofa. I just went down to the farm around the corner from George's house and picked up some fresh strawberries to make strawberry shortcake tonight for dessert. They look delicious! We'll probably just cook something on the grill for dinner and watch the Red Sox/Yankees game a bit later on TV. I think there is a race on too, sometime today.

Wow! Those views must have been spectacular! The first one "going down" makes it look like the highway is just dropping over a cliff.
Now this is a good test for how much you trust the driver :)
Isn't there a train ride up the mountain too? Some sort of cog train?
Yes there is Iggy, called the Cog Railway. When we got up there the train was just leaving to go back down the mountain. I think it would be scarier on the train than in the car!
WOwsa that was gorgeous! One of these days I'll get up to see you and we will HAVE to do that :-) (Yeah But I've got acrophobia :-()

Awesome pics, Lainie. When we were up that way in early October of 2003, Mt. Washington was already snow capped and off limits to the public. I think I'd make sure I had good brakes before driving up there. Or make that, driving back down from there.
We grabbed a brochure for the Cog Railway from one of the stores up that way to check it out. Not sure if I would like coming back down from that mountain that way either.
Our brakes were smoking pretty bad on the way down. We had to stop and pull over a couple of times to let them cool off.
Ummm, just one comment...6000 feet is only just over one mile up. One mile is equal to 5280 feet. So the summit on Mt. Washington, at 6288 feet isn't even close to 8 miles up, lol. I bet it felt like it though.
I took a cog railway to the top of Pikes Peak in Colorado, that is 14,110 feet high. I definitely was a little short of breath at the summit.

I know we weren't 8 miles up but with the winding road it was actually an 8 mile ride to the top.
My parents have been to Pike's Peak, chicagolady. They have some awesome pics from there, too. (all slides...another reason I bought that slide transfer thing for my dad)

I'm not a huge fan of planning things way in advance. If I had planned this summer vacation last July, I would have had to change all of my plans! :-) I am thinking about another vacation in February, however. Perhaps a cruise??
There is a really awesome Wynonna Judd concert in December in Chicago. Anyone wanna come get me and take me to the concert?
